Desalination - Understanding the Concept

Being a leading Indian manufacturer of submersible pumps, Darling Pumps has been the Chief architect of submersible pump revolution in India. Our new & innovative product line has set a benchmark for other to follow and has thus always kept us one step ahead of the market. We offer a wide range of sewage, slurry and dewatering submersible pumps in India and countries abroad. To add to our innovative product line, we have introduced pumps for desalination. A unique concept, desalination is getting a lot of attention these days.
In this blog, we will be discussing about the process of desalination. Moreover, we will also be discussing the various methods that one can use to execute the process of desalination. For starters let’s take a look at what the whole process of desalination is all about.

The Process of Desalination
The process of desalination is used in order to extract mineral components from saline water. Put in simple words, desalination means the removal of  minerals and salts from a target substance.
When water is to be produced for human consumption or irrigation then the saltwater is desalinated for the same. Salt is one of the by-products of desalination. When we talk about the modern interest in the process of desalination, it is majorly focused on a cost-effective way to provide fresh water for the use of humans. The process of desalination is also used on many submarines as well as seagoing ships. It becomes one of the few rainfall-independent water sources.

The water obtained after the process of desalination is generally more healthy than the water that is obtained from groundwater and rivers. Moreover, it is found that there is much less salt as well as limescale in the desalinated water.
There are various methods attached to the execution of the process of desalination. Each method has its own advantages as well as disadvantages. Let’s have a look at the list of these methods -
  • Vacuum distillation
  • Multi-stage flash distillation
  • Multiple effect distillation
  • Vapor-compression distillation
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Freeze-thaw
  • Solar evaporation
  • Electrodialysis reversal
  • Membrane distillation
  • Wave-powered desalination
Every seawater desalination method consumes different amounts of energy. This includes thermal energy as well as electrical energy.
When we think about the costs that go in while executing the process of desalination, there are various factors that decide this. A few of these factors include the type of facility, capacity, feed water, and location. On top of these factors some other are energy, financing, labor, as well as concentrate disposal.
Another challenging factor in desalination is pumping process. Not all pumps & metals which are available in market can work in sea water. Darling Pumps over the years have successfully supplied pumps for many sea water related applications & pumping. The metal used here is exclusive & very reliable.
Just for your information, for desalination, type of pumps is less relevant compared to the MOC & its reliability. Darling Pumps is proud to offer pumps for desalination. We  have offered pumps for Sea water in Duplex or SS316L series. For more information on desalination, get in touch with us at +91 99819 92833.

Tips to Save Energy on Pumping System

As renowned drainage submersible pump suppliers and providers of dewatering submersible pumps in India, in the first part of this blog, we managed to share with you 3 great tips on saving energy on your pumping system.

Taking the same discussion further, here are 4 more tips to save energy on pumping system -

1. Minimizing the system pressure drop

When you think about minimizing the system pressure drop, the best way to do so is through pipe-sizing optimization. The hydraulic friction loss would create a decrease in pressure from one end of a straight pipe to the other end of the pipe. The factors that influence the system pressure drop are pipe size (diameter), flow rate, pipe characteristics (material, surface roughness, etc.), properties of the fluid being pumped and overall pipe length.

2. Implementing proper control valves

The control valves are used in controlling pressure and/or flow. They can assist in reducing energy losses over non-controlled systems like multiple locations with different elevations and distances as well as irrigation systems that have a fixed-speed pump. However, The main functions of control valves are bypassing flow or throttling flow. The throttling process decreases the flow. On the other hand the process increases the pressure. Minimizing excess pressure is possible by bypassing excess flow back to another location or the reservoir.

3. Implementing (VSDs) variable speed drives

The drivers are used for variable-speed operation or fixed-speed. Energy can be saved for many applications simply by implementing variable speed drives. With the help of a variable speed drive, the rotational speed of the pump can be adjusted. This helps in achieving the appropriate head and flow that is required for the process. A variable speed drive often gets added to an existing pump motor system. This helps in slowing down the pump to fulfill actual requirements as compared to the theoretical requirements that come out at the beginning.  When a VSD is finally installed, it can accommodate changing system demands, that include a lot of potential future expansion plans. This proves to be a great method as it results in the lowest life cycle costs and the highest energy efficiency.

4. Eliminating unnecessary uses

Do not overlook this simple method of saving energy by eliminating all the unnecessary use. Such measures include using pressure switches to control the number of pumps in service as well as shutting down any unnecessary pump.
